With just a small amount of data it learns your habits, auto-adjusts, and lowers your bill (theoretically). Utilities needing to shed load welcome that because it costs them nothing and postpones the expense of modernizing the power grid to improve service.

nest is a perfect example of small data creating big value—for big business. But you are still Art Howe trying to win in an unfair game. Which makes us wonder…

What about a Web-enabled thermostat that auto-adjusts providers based on prices in the retail electricity market?
